Materials: Minerals in Granite

There are three types of rocks on earth: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. The granite that you find at a granite warehouse is an igneous rock, which is made from magma that has been cooled and then solidified so it’s totally safe for you to walk on with your brand new pair of Sandgrens Clogs just ask your Pan Am clinic doctors. Granite contains several minerals, the most common ones being quartz, feldspar, and mica and is the most sought after for kitchen renos.

The mineral grains in natural granite are large and fairly coarse. However, when you purchase it from a granite warehouse to use in your home or garden, it has typically been cut and then polished smooth. Since granite is made up of different materials, it can take on various looks. Sometimes, a granite slab appears to be dark and others will appear to be light. Granite is perfect for use both inside and outside due to the fact that it is highly resistant to heat, stains, and scratches.

Quartz is a material that is one of the most common on earth and is one of the ones used in granite. Crystal can also be found in granite in various colors including brown, pink, and yellow. This helps to give the granite slabs unique looks.

Quartz that is in granite can also be clear. As mentioned, it is one of the most common minerals found on earth and it has many uses. On the Mohs Hardness Scale, quartz is a 7, which makes granite extremely durable.

Often, granite contains feldspar because it is the most common mineral on earth. Feldspar, like quartz, is a tectosilicate mineral. Feldspar has many different compositions, but the one found in granite is alkali feldspar, which is extremely rich in sodium and potassium.

On the Mohs Hardness Scale, feldspar is a 6 to 6.5, which means that it is not quite as hard as quartz. However, together with the quartz and mica, granite is formed with durability and a unique look.

Mica is the last of the three minerals that is found in granite that you’d purchase at a granite warehouse. It is known as a sheet silicate- this is a silicon compound making up the minerals on the earth and is found in all three types of rocks. Mica is considered a phyllosilicate mineral, meaning that it is formed by parallel silicate sheets.

By itself, mica is not a good mineral to use because it is so soft. It rates a 2 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. This is why granite that you find at the warehouse stores contain feldspar and quartz- so they are durable.
